Sara Jobson, a doctoral student at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador, led a study uncovering the potential immortality of severed sea cucumber tissue. Jobson described their findings as observing “little lab zombies,” where the tissue manages to survive independently in a state that is neither dead nor fully alive.
In the study published in Science Advances, Jobson and her team experimented with scarlet sea cucumber tentacles and tube feet, observing how the amputated tissue reacted in seawater. Instead of decaying, the tissue appeared to self-sterilize and seal off the wound, eventually transforming into round translucent blobs with red pigments at their cores over several years.
Despite exhibiting characteristics of living organisms such as nutrient absorption and an active immune system, the tissue samples did not reproduce like typical living entities. Jobson referred to the phenomenon as “zombie tissue,” existing in a mysterious realm between life and death, prompting questions about its evolutionary purpose.
Jobson highlighted the potential scientific research opportunities presented by these resilient tissue samples.
