Ontario Provincial Police have announced their largest-ever fentanyl seizure, which took place during a raid in Windsor. The authorities revealed that a total of 46 kilograms of fentanyl were confiscated in late September following search warrants executed at various locations and vehicles in the southwestern Ontario border city.
According to a statement from the police, the quantity of fentanyl seized was sufficient for approximately 460,000 street-level doses, posing a severe threat to a moderately sized city. The individuals charged in connection with the bust include a 25-year-old man from Windsor and a 29-year-old man from Vancouver. Both suspects are facing multiple drug-related charges and are scheduled to appear in court in Windsor on December 8.
The investigation into the drug trafficking network began in the fall of 2024 after identifying two key members associated with criminal organizations. The collaborative effort of several OPP and Windsor police units led to the discovery of not only fentanyl but also cocaine, heroin, firearms, cash, cellphones, jewelry, and other illicit substances during the raids. The total value of the seized drugs is estimated at $6.5 million.
Law enforcement officials stated that the origin of the fentanyl is still under investigation. Commissioner Thomas Carrique emphasized the critical importance of combating illicit fentanyl, labeling it as a national enforcement priority. The authorities are working in conjunction with partners across Ontario to prevent the influx of this lethal drug into the communities they serve.
Windsor’s deputy police chief, Jason Crowley, underscored the significance of the operation in safeguarding lives by removing a substantial amount of fentanyl from circulation. He highlighted the effectiveness of strong partnerships at local and provincial levels in achieving such outcomes.
Community activist Lisa Valente, founder of the Windsor women’s addiction recovery group House of Hope, expressed her approval of the fentanyl seizure, characterizing it as a positive development for a community facing a crisis. Valente noted that any reduction in drug availability could lead users to experience adverse effects due to potential alterations in drug composition. She hopes that a decline in accessible drugs will encourage individuals to seek assistance and support services for addiction recovery.
