Some travelers are feeling anxious as WestJet initiates the first phase of flight cancellations in anticipation of a potential strike by flight attendants. WestJet has announced the cancellation of 276 flights by 3 p.m. MT on Saturday to prevent passengers and crew from being stranded. Travelers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
According to a WestJet spokesperson, the cancellations are a response to the union’s strike notice and the failure to reach an agreement. The airline’s latest proposal aimed to address the union’s key concerns but was not satisfactory to the flight attendants’ union.
If an agreement is not reached by Sunday morning, a work stoppage could lead to the cancellation of numerous flights over the long weekend. WestJet is engaged in negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing 4,400 flight attendants, in hopes of reaching a new contract.
The strike notice issued by the union does not automatically lead to job action, but it has left passengers uncertain about the status of their flights. Despite WestJet’s claim of offering competitive compensation and benefits, the union maintains that the proposals do not meet their members’ needs.
While progress has been made in negotiations, unresolved issues still need to be addressed to prevent a strike. The federal minister of jobs and families has intervened to mediate discussions between the two parties in Calgary.
In response to the potential disruption, affected travelers are advised to monitor their flight status and take advantage of WestJet’s one-time change or cancellation offer. Passengers with certain bookings may be eligible for refunds based on the type of ticket purchased. The airline is committed to refunding or re-accommodating affected passengers as required by Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations.
