Netflix is developing a new college romance drama series based on the best-selling book “Icebreaker” by Hannah Grace. The novel, released in 2022, follows the story of figure skater Anastasia Allen and hockey team captain Nate Hawkins as they fall in love while sharing the ice at the fictional University of California, Maple Hills campus.
“Icebreaker” became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, selling nearly five million copies in 24 languages. The series will explore the collision of Anastasia and Nate’s worlds as they transition from competition to obsession.
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, made the announcement at the Banff World Media Festival, expressing excitement about bringing another beloved romance novel to the screen. The series is expected to follow the success of Crave’s “Heated Rivalry,” which also revolves around the passionate relationships in the world of hockey.
“Icebreaker” is the first installment in Grace’s Maple Hills series, with “Wildfire” (2023) and “Daydream” (2025) to follow. The show will be led by showrunner Amanda Lasher, known for her work on popular series like “Riverdale” and “Gossip Girl.”
The rise of sports romance books, particularly in the hockey genre, has been fueled by platforms like BookTok, attracting a growing audience of literary enthusiasts. The adaptation of “Icebreaker” adds to the expanding collection of romance dramas captivating audiences worldwide.
