“Rare ‘Super-Puff’ Planets Found 1,113 Light Years Away”

Date:

In a distant location 1,113 light years away from our planet, there are two extraordinary planets orbiting a single star. These planets, resembling Jupiter in size but with a density similar to cotton candy, are a rare discovery known as “super-puffs.”

George Dransfield, an astrophysicist from the University of Oxford and the lead author of the study on these unique planets, likened them to a fluffy blob of shaving foam. The mystery of how such puffy celestial bodies could reach sizes over 1,000 times that of Earth remains unanswered, as pointed out by co-author Antoine Petit, a mathematician from France’s Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

Published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the findings showcased the rarity of super-puffs, with fewer than 40 out of nearly 6,300 confirmed exoplanets discovered by NASA exhibiting these characteristics. Lisa Dang, an astrophysicist at the University of Waterloo, emphasized the significance of the discovery of two super-puffs orbiting the same star.

The enigmatic nature of super-puffs challenges existing planetary formation theories, according to Nicolas Cowan, a professor at McGill University. He outlined two potential explanations for their existence: either they are very young, preventing their innards from cooling and compressing, or they are continuously heated, possibly due to tidal interactions with other celestial bodies.

Detected by NASA’s Tess satellite, these two colossal planets in the Volans constellation, nicknamed the flying fish, are suspected to be composed of hydrogen and helium. Despite their massive size comparable to Jupiter, they contain only a fraction of Jupiter’s mass, raising questions about their formation and evolution.

The sibling relationship between these planets, as described by Petit, adds a poetic touch to their discovery. Further research, including observations from NASA’s Webb Space Telescope, will be crucial in confirming their characteristics and shedding light on the evolution of such unusual celestial bodies.
