Nathan Rourke shined at the CFL awards ceremony on Thursday, with the West Division dominating the accolades. The B.C. Lions’ quarterback clinched the George Reed Trophy for being the CFL’s outstanding player and was also honored as the top Canadian player at Club Regent Casino.
Rourke joined a prestigious group of players, including Brady Oliveira, Jon Cornish, Russ Jackson, and Tony Gabriel, as the only ones to win both awards in the same season. Expressing his gratitude, Rourke acknowledged the legendary status of the previous winners and the honor of carrying on their legacy.
Trey Vaval from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was another standout, receiving awards for top rookie and special-teams player. Additional individual winners included B.C.’s Mathieu Betts for defensive player and Jermarcus Hardrick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for outstanding lineman.
The awards were determined through a voting process involving the Football Reporters of Canada and all nine CFL head coaches, with a total of fifty-three votes cast. Notably, Logan Ferland from the Saskatchewan Roughriders was recognized with the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Trophy, while Andrew Peirson of the B.C. Lions received the Tom Pate Memorial Award for sportsmanship and community contributions.
Rourke, hailing from Victoria, achieved personal bests in various statistical categories during the season, leading the Lions to impressive offensive performance metrics. Despite the team’s strong regular-season finish and a playoff win against Calgary, their season concluded with a loss to Saskatchewan.
Reflecting on his individual accolades, Rourke expressed a desire to have traded them for the opportunity to compete in the Grey Cup, emphasizing the importance of team success over personal recognition. Looking ahead, the focus shifts as Saskatchewan prepares to face the Montreal Alouettes in the upcoming Grey Cup showdown.
