Two vibrant orange autonomous sail drones are currently afloat on Lake Erie as part of a recent initiative by the U.S. Coast Guard. Launched in May, these drones are the first of their kind in the Great Lakes region and come equipped with 360-degree cameras. The U.S. Coast Guard has highlighted their multiple functions, which include aiding in search and rescue missions, responding to environmental spills, and supporting law enforcement activities.
Continuous monitoring of the cameras is carried out by U.S. Coast Guard personnel around the clock, allowing for manual adjustments to the drones when needed. Notably, the footage captured is not recorded, as stated by officials.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia from the U.S. Coast Guard emphasized that the primary purpose of the drones is not for surveillance but rather to enhance situational awareness on the scene in real-time. Describing them as mobile cameras, Garcia explained that they offer valuable insights into ongoing events.
Both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement, may access the drone technology following established protocols, as confirmed by Garcia. One of the key functions of the drones, according to Garcia, is to assist in border security efforts and prevent cross-border criminal activities.
While the Canadian Coast Guard has clarified that it is not directly involved in the U.S. sail drone program, a spokesperson emphasized the close collaboration between the two agencies. The partnership between the Canadian Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard plays a crucial role in advancing maritime security priorities and fostering robust governmental cooperation.
These sail drones are deployed within U.S. waters in the Great Lakes and are part of the comprehensive marine security operation that operates continuously. Equipped with collision avoidance capabilities, the drones autonomously navigate away from vessels. To ensure safety, boaters are advised to maintain a distance of approximately 100 meters from the sail drones. Furthermore, the deployment of these drones is a seasonal initiative, with retrieval taking place once ice begins to form on the water.
