Tragically, he was fatally attacked by a bear on August 8, 2024, as he ventured outside with his camera at a remote installation on Brevoort Island, situated off the eastern coast of Baffin Island.
According to a report by Nasittuq Corporation, the company overseeing North Warning System sites across a vast region from Yukon to eastern Labrador, the 34-year-old was aware of a bear’s presence in the vicinity but was unaware of a second bear nearby. Surveillance footage revealed that the second bear obstructed Best’s path to safety, leading to a fatal encounter.
Best, a Labrador native with a diverse work history, had a passion for photography and technology. Despite receiving polar bear awareness training, the report noted some missing documentation related to his training. His untimely demise has prompted calls for enhanced safety measures at radar sites, such as the implementation of fences and motion-sensor alarms.
The report highlighted the unprecedented nature of the incident, as there had been no prior fatalities or injuries from bear encounters during the operation of the North Warning System over seven decades.
