Canada Post has presented a plan to the federal government aimed at revamping its financial sustainability as a postal service. The plan was submitted following changes to the postal service’s mandate announced by Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound in late September. These changes involve modifications to mail delivery standards, the expansion of community mailboxes, and the lifting of the moratorium on closing rural post offices.
Canada Post confirmed the submission of the plan to Lightbound at the end of the previous week. However, the details of the proposal will only be disclosed after receiving approval from Ottawa. Laurent de Casanove, the director of communications for Lightbound, verified that the minister is currently reviewing the plan.
Doug Ettinger, the CEO of Canada Post, emphasized that the plan aims to modernize the postal service while ensuring the continuity of essential services for Canadians. He stated, “Canadians deserve a postal service that is strong, stable, and adaptable to their evolving requirements, and we are committed to achieving that.”
These efforts to revitalize Canada Post’s operations coincide with the ongoing negotiations between the company and its primary union, which is engaged in rotating strikes during the critical holiday season.
