“Roughriders Stage Last-Minute Comeback to Reach Grey Cup”

Date:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders secured a thrilling 24-21 victory over the B.C. Lions in the West Division final as Tommy Nield caught a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Harris with just 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. This crucial play propelled the Riders to the Grey Cup, where they will face the Montreal Alouettes on November 16 in Winnipeg.

Trailing 21-17 with only 1:03 left on the clock, the Riders orchestrated a remarkable 74-yard drive in seven plays to score the game-winning touchdown and secure their spot in the championship game. Earlier in the day, the Alouettes secured their place in the Grey Cup by defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 19-16 in the East Division final.

Despite initially leading 14-7 in the third quarter, the Riders found themselves trailing after the Lions scored two quick touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead. However, a resilient Saskatchewan team managed to claw their way back and emerge victorious.

In a game characterized by strong defensive performances, both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm in the first half, resulting in a total of 11 punts – six by the Riders and five by the Lions. B.C. managed to score the only touchdown of the half on a nine-play, 103-yard drive late in the second quarter, with quarterback Nathan Rourke capping off the drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown.

The Riders’ journey to the Grey Cup was not without its tense moments, including a critical decision by head coach Corey Mace to opt for a field goal instead of going for it on third down from the B.C. five-yard line with three minutes remaining. This decision paid off as Lauther’s 13-yard field goal narrowed the gap to 21-17, setting the stage for the dramatic final minutes of the game.

Saskatchewan’s stellar defense stepped up when it mattered most, forcing consecutive two-and-out possessions to give their offense a chance to secure the victory. With a sold-out crowd of 33,350 at Mosaic Stadium, the Riders showcased their resilience and determination, booking their ticket to the Grey Cup for the first time since their 2013 championship win over the Tiger-Cats.

Head coach Corey Mace expressed confidence in his team’s collective effort as they prepare to face the Alouettes in the Grey Cup, marking a remarkable journey for Mace in just his second season at the helm of the Green and White.
