“Rat Infestation Plagues Gaza Stadium Tents, Sparking Health Crisis”

Date:

Rats are scuttling around the Yarmouk stadium tents in Gaza City, hidden in the darkness but causing chaos by knocking over heaps of trash, sending tent residents into a panic. Displaced Palestinians from Israeli airstrikes have taken refuge among the stadium ruins, setting up makeshift shelters near a dump.

People in the tents report that large black rats run rampant, even climbing on them while they sleep, sometimes resulting in bites and the potential spread of diseases. Fathi Subh expressed his distress over the dire conditions, pointing out the challenges posed by rats, garbage, insects, and roaches.

Despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in October, the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs reveals that two million Palestinians in Gaza remain displaced, with many still living in tents. The destruction in Gaza has created ideal conditions for rat infestations, leading to families grappling with health issues caused by the rodents.

The United Nations documented over 70,000 cases of ectoparasitic infestations in Gaza since the beginning of the year, with reports of rodents and pests commonly visible in displacement sites, along with skin infections. Rats can transmit various diseases to humans, including hantavirus and Leptospirosis, among others.

To address the sanitation crisis, COGAT, the Israeli military agency controlling Gaza’s access, has allowed the entry of pest control materials and mousetraps into the enclave. Despite efforts to combat the infestation, residents like Kifah Subh continue to struggle with rats infiltrating their tents, leading to fear and frustration.

Dr. Ayman Abu Rahma from the Gaza Health Ministry highlighted the escalating health risks posed by the rat infestation, with emergency cases increasing due to rat bites, especially among children and the elderly. Aid groups emphasize the urgent need for pesticides to control the infestation, as rat traps have proven ineffective in Gaza’s challenging environment.

Basel Al-Dahnoun shared his harrowing experience of waking up to a rat bite, emphasizing the plea for assistance in combating the rodents. With damaged sewage and sanitation systems in Gaza, the situation is exacerbated by restrictions on humanitarian aid, leading to a worsening health hazard environment.

The dire conditions in Gaza have led to a proliferation of waste and debris, contributing to the spread of rodents and parasites. Save the Children’s Joel Onyeke stressed the critical need for immediate action to address the infestation and improve living conditions for the affected families.
