In spite of recent allegations, President Donald Trump continues to support his long-standing confidant and special envoy for peace initiatives, Steve Witkoff. A transcript published by Bloomberg News revealed a conversation on October 14 between Witkoff and Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing collaboration on a ceasefire strategy for Ukraine and proposing that Putin raise the issue with Trump.
The White House faced criticism and confusion following the leak of a U.S.-led peace plan for Ukraine, which outlined terms such as Ukraine limiting its military size and renouncing future NATO membership, while Russia would expand its controlled territories post its invasion in February 2022. Ushakov dismissed parts of the leaked plan as “fake” and refrained from further comments due to confidentiality concerns.
House Republican Don Bacon called for Witkoff’s removal from the negotiation team, accusing him of favoring Russia over Ukraine’s sovereignty. Criticism also came from Rep. Ted Lieu, who labeled Witkoff as an “actual traitor” on social media.
President Trump defended Witkoff’s actions, describing them as standard negotiation tactics during a call with Russians. Trump mentioned upcoming meetings between Witkoff, Putin, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who were instrumental in brokering a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
The Kremlin confirmed Witkoff’s visit to Moscow next week for discussions on the peace plan with Russian leaders. Meanwhile, Ushakov expressed dissatisfaction over the leak and indicated plans to communicate with Witkoff regarding the matter.
While Trump has previously criticized Putin for actions in Ukraine, questions arise concerning the administration’s alignment with the Kremlin. Witkoff’s appointment as a special envoy, despite his limited diplomatic experience, drew attention due to his longstanding ties with Trump and significant political contributions.
Despite Witkoff’s success in mediating conflicts in the Middle East, his diplomatic efforts in the Russia-Ukraine crisis have faced severe scrutiny. Recent revelations of undisclosed meetings between key officials have further raised concerns about the transparency and effectiveness of the peace negotiations.
As Ukraine and its allies strive to amend the peace plan following the backlash, the international community closely monitors the developments. European leaders, including Canada, have engaged in discussions to navigate the ongoing diplomatic challenges and seek a resolution to the conflict.
