“Canadian Agency Culls Ostrich Farm Amid Avian Flu”

Date:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced on Friday that it has conducted a cull of the ostrich population at a farm located in Edgewood, B.C. This decision followed the Supreme Court of Canada’s refusal to hear an appeal to save the flock at Universal Ostrich Farms, where avian flu was identified last December.

The CFIA, in consultation with experts, determined that the most appropriate and humane course of action was to utilize professional marksmen in a controlled on-farm setting for the depopulation. The agency emphasized that all culling activities were carried out under CFIA veterinary supervision.

Following the detection of avian flu within the flock last December, resulting in the death of 70 birds, the CFIA issued an order for the culling of the farm’s birds. Prior to the cull, there were an estimated 300 to 330 ostriches on the farm.

The prolonged saga surrounding this event sparked discussions regarding perceived government intervention, lack of trust in government entities, and strategies employed to contain viruses. Despite claims by the farm’s owners that the cull was unnecessary due to the flock’s health and immunity, the CFIA asserted that seemingly healthy ostriches could still pose a risk as carriers of the virus, potentially leading to dangerous mutations, especially if exposed to wildlife.

The conflict initiated a protracted legal battle, culminating in the Supreme Court of Canada’s dismissal of a final appeal from the farm’s owners. Supporters of the farm expressed sorrow, with a social media post by co-owner Karen Espersen mourning the loss of the ostriches.

Farm spokesperson Katie Pasitney, daughter of co-owner Espersen, vowed to challenge the CFIA’s authority, criticizing what she described as excessive power wielded by the agency. Politicians and officials, including Conservative MP Scott Anderson and B.C. Agriculture and Food Minister Lana Popham, expressed their perspectives on the situation, acknowledging the difficulties faced by farmers dealing with avian influenza outbreaks.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed their presence at the farm at the CFIA’s request for ongoing operations related to “disposal” and “demobilization.” While Edgewood residents expressed mixed sentiments about the cull, with some believing it was necessary, others acknowledged the divisive impact it had on the community.
