President Donald Trump has demanded the immediate firing of ABC’s late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel, by both ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney. This call came following Kimmel’s monologue that included a remark about Melania Trump just days before a shooting incident near a gathering of journalists and politicians.
In his segment last Thursday, Kimmel made a comment about Melania Trump having a glow like an expectant widow. Two days later, during the White House correspondents’ dinner, a shooting occurred in the lobby of the Washington Hilton where the event was held. The suspect, identified as Cole Allen, fired at Secret Service agents before being apprehended.
President Trump, along with Melania, expressed their disapproval of Kimmel’s joke, with Melania calling it corrosive and demanding action from ABC. Trump labeled the joke as beyond the pale and insisted on Kimmel’s immediate termination.
Kimmel defended his monologue, stating that the joke was not intended as a call to violence. The suspect, Allen, had made reservations at the Washington Hilton before the incident, raising questions about the timing of the joke in relation to the shooting.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has initiated early reviews of Disney’s licenses, citing concerns over diversity practices. This move follows a previous investigation and signals a heightened scrutiny of media outlets by the current administration.
Despite the controversy, Kimmel’s show was temporarily suspended but has since returned, garnering high viewership numbers. Trump hinted at a possible lawsuit against ABC over Kimmel’s reinstatement, recalling a past settlement the network made in a defamation case involving him. Ultimately, ABC and Kimmel agreed to a contract extension through May 2027.
The situation has sparked debates over freedom of speech, government intervention in media, and the boundaries of comedy in public discourse. As the controversy continues, the fallout from Kimmel’s joke and the subsequent reactions underscore the complexities of balancing entertainment, satire, and political sensitivity in the media landscape.
