“US Request Delays Opening of Gordie Howe Bridge”

Date:

The United States requested a delay in the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday. Carney mentioned that some issues had been brought up, leading to the postponement of the planned ribbon-cutting event by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. He emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a smooth operation of the bridge for Canadians, Americans, and others in the coming decades.

Carney stated that discussions with the United States would focus on resolving technical aspects that have been raised. This delay follows a statement from a White House official affirming U.S. President Donald Trump’s unchanged stance on the bridge’s opening. Despite Canada funding the bridge’s construction and joint ownership with Michigan, Trump previously threatened to delay the opening until the U.S. received compensation.

The Prime Minister did not delve into specifics regarding the outstanding issues but highlighted the distinction between discussions on the bridge and those related to the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement. Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian federal minister for Canada-U.S. trade, expressed optimism in quickly resolving the remaining issues and moving forward with the bridge’s opening.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens supported the delay, citing the current economic climate due to trade tensions initiated by Trump. Dilkens emphasized the need for a favorable trade deal with the U.S. and encouraged patience for a better agreement. The bridge’s delay was criticized by various stakeholders, including Stephen Laskowski, President and CEO of the Ontario Trucking Association, who highlighted the potential economic benefits the bridge would bring to the trucking industry.

Former Ontario deputy premier Dwight Duncan expressed his lack of surprise at the delay, attributing it to unresolved cross-border trade issues. He described the delay as an unnecessary setback caused by an unpredictable partner in the U.S. Despite the setback, members of Gordie Howe’s family remained optimistic, embracing patience as they awaited further developments regarding the bridge’s opening.
