United Conservative Party members have successfully influenced Premier Danielle Smith’s government to implement policies aligned with their preferences. Initiatives such as banning vote-counting machines, regulating professional regulators, limiting solar panels on farmland, incorporating “medical choice” language into the Alberta Bill of Rights, and mandating parental consent for students changing pronouns have been enacted following resolutions by UCP grassroots at party conventions.
At the upcoming annual meeting in Edmonton, UCP activists aim to push the Smith government further by proposing new restrictions in various policy areas. These include banning non-official emblems like rainbow or transgender pride flags at government buildings, schools, and universities; discontinuing the addition of fluoride to municipal water systems; restricting public funding for late-pregnancy abortions except in cases of serious risk to the mother’s health; and advocating for a review of COVID vaccine recommendations.
One notable resolution seeks to challenge the government’s plan to introduce a “no-fault” auto insurance system by 2027. Proposed by injury lawyer Karamveer Lalh, the resolution emphasizes the importance of court access rights and may prompt the government to reconsider its policy stance if widely supported at the convention.
Over the years, Smith has strived to align her government’s actions with the preferences of UCP grassroots, distinguishing herself from her predecessor Jason Kenney. While she has demonstrated responsiveness to party resolutions, some matters, like designating carbon dioxide as a pollutant or prohibiting union donations to political parties, remain unresolved.
The UCP grassroots have historically influenced policy directions, including initiatives not previously on the public agenda. As the party members express further ambitions, Smith’s ability to maintain their satisfaction will be a key factor in her leadership approach.
