Jesse Marsch, the coach of the Canadian national men’s soccer team, expresses uncertainty regarding the upcoming friendly match against Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, due to escalating tensions between Venezuela and the United States.
Marsch, speaking at BMO Field in Toronto where Canada is playing Ecuador this week, stated that they are hopeful the game will proceed despite the current political climate. Venezuela has mobilized military personnel in response to perceived threats from U.S. naval forces in the Caribbean, including the USS Gerald R. Ford.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the U.S. of having ulterior motives, which has raised concerns about potential military actions. Canada Soccer’s Kevin Blue emphasized that while they are aware of global geopolitics, the game is contracted, and both teams aim for it to go on as planned.
Although the match is set to happen in Florida, Venezuela is the hosting nation. Canada Soccer will receive an appearance fee as the visiting team, with contractual provisions in place if the match is canceled. Notably, there was a prior cancellation notice for the game in September, which was later retracted.
The possibility of relocating the match, even to BMO Field, was considered previously, but logistical constraints related to preparations for next year’s Men’s World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, made it impractical. Concerns have also arisen about the impact of Trump’s immigration policies on the tournament, including issues with Iranian participation.
Jesse Marsch, an American residing in Italy, has been critical of Trump’s policies, particularly in relation to Canada. While he previously called out Trump’s rhetoric, he has since refrained from engaging in political discussions. Marsch’s focus remains on the team’s performance on the field rather than delving into political controversies.
