The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, Chris Tanev, was hospitalized following an on-ice incident during Saturday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite the collision with Philadelphia forward Matvei Michkov, Tanev maintained movement in all limbs, according to head coach Craig Berube.
The incident occurred with 11:37 remaining in the game when Tanev and Michkov collided shoulder-to-shoulder. Although the contact was primarily shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jolted backward upon impact, causing him to remain on the ice face down. Trainers provided immediate assistance, stabilizing his head and neck before transporting him off the ice on a stretcher. This game marked Tanev’s return after missing four games due to a concussion, and Michkov received a minor penalty for interference.
Following the match, Berube revealed that Tanev was taken to a Philadelphia hospital for evaluation and displayed movement in all extremities. Berube also mentioned the possibility of Tanev returning to Toronto with the team.
Berube expressed optimism regarding Tanev’s condition, stating, “He’s moving, and I believe he will recover. He is undergoing tests, so we will wait for the results. There is a chance he may accompany us back home.”
During the game, Tanev contributed to a goal by Jake McCabe with an assist in the second period. Auston Matthews, who scored a goal in the game, expressed concern for Tanev’s well-being, emphasizing his importance to the team and the somber atmosphere that arises when a stretcher is brought onto the ice. Team members are keeping Tanev in their thoughts, offering prayers and hoping for a swift recovery.
