“Saskatoon to Host 100th Brier Curling Championship”

Date:

Saskatoon has been selected to host the 100th anniversary of the Brier in 2027, marking the seventh time the city will welcome the prestigious men’s curling championship. The centennial celebration is scheduled to commence on February 26, 2027, at the SaskTel Centre. Notably, Saskatoon previously hosted the Brier in 2004 for its 75th edition and in 2012.

Curling Canada revealed the successful bid by Saskatoon at a local Montana’s BBQ & Bar, the official sponsor of the Brier. Tickets for the event may become available for purchase as early as March. Steve Turner, the Executive Director of CurlSask, emphasized the significance of hosting the Brier in Saskatchewan, stating that it is a province where curling holds deep cultural roots and garners immense support from knowledgeable fans.

Regina was the last Saskatchewan city to host the national men’s curling championship in 2024, with the event having been held 12 times collectively in Regina and Saskatoon. Teams from Saskatchewan have clinched the title seven times, with the most recent win dating back to 1980 when the Saskatoon-based team led by Rick Folk emerged victorious.

Mayor Cynthia Block expressed excitement about showcasing Saskatoon’s charm and honoring the province’s rich curling heritage through hosting the Brier. She emphasized the special bond that Saskatchewan residents have with their local rinks, highlighting the cultural significance of the sport in the region.

The successful bid for hosting the Brier was spearheaded by Discover Saskatoon and Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc. The organizations secured funding approval from city councillors earlier this year to support the bid, with estimated economic benefits including substantial business sales, tax revenues, and hotel bookings.

Following the bid win, Discover Saskatoon is expected to provide detailed reports to the city council regarding participation figures, economic impacts, and event budgets specific to Saskatoon. The inaugural Brier took place in Toronto in 1927, and the victor of the 2027 Brier will represent Canada at the 2027 World Men’s Curling Championship. The upcoming 2026 Brier is slated to be held in St. John’s, N.L., starting on February 27.
