At least 26 individuals lost their lives, and many are unaccounted for following a Russian drone and missile strike that targeted residential buildings in Ternopil, a city in western Ukraine. Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, reported the casualties on Wednesday, with 26 people still missing, including three children, and nearly 100 individuals injured.
The attack involved 476 drones and 48 missiles launched by Russia, impacting energy and transport infrastructure in Ukraine and leading to emergency power cuts in various regions amidst freezing temperatures. The upper levels of a residential structure in Ternopil were severely damaged in the assault, with black smoke billowing and flames visible from a fire within the building.
Klymenko shared updates on Telegram, mentioning ongoing efforts by emergency teams to search through the wreckage of the devastated apartment building. He emphasized the importance of locating any potential survivors trapped under the debris. Reports confirmed the tragic loss of three children in the incident.
Oksana Kobel expressed hope for her son’s safety, who was in a ninth-floor apartment during the attack. The escalating situation prompted Poland, a NATO member neighboring western Ukraine, to temporarily close Rzeszow and Lublin airports in the southeast, while deploying Polish and allied aircraft to safeguard airspace as a precaution.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the strikes on multi-storey residential buildings in Ternopil, urging international allies to intensify pressure on Russia to halt the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He stressed the need for enhanced support, including air defense missiles, to counter Russian aggression and protect Ukrainian civilians.
Energy officials reported significant damage to energy infrastructure across seven Ukrainian regions, leading to power consumption restrictions nationwide. Witnesses in Lviv heard explosions, and residents in Kyiv sought refuge in metro stations as a safety measure. Russian authorities denied intentionally targeting civilians, attributing their airstrikes to alleged “terrorist attacks” on Russian territories, while Ukraine’s military confirmed retaliatory strikes on military sites in Russia.
Zelenskyy engaged in diplomatic discussions in Turkey and planned to meet with U.S. military officials in Kyiv to advance peace negotiations with Russia. Amid escalating tensions, face-to-face talks between Kyiv and Moscow have been limited since earlier discussions in Istanbul. The Kremlin downplayed reports of a U.S.-proposed peace plan for Ukraine, emphasizing the absence of significant developments in peace negotiations.
Efforts to support Ukraine and shield it from further Russian aggression continue among European allies, with discussions focusing on postwar funding, security guarantees, and future defense commitments. The U.S. has ruled out deploying troops on Ukrainian soil, underscoring the complexities of the evolving geopolitical landscape in the region.
