“Prosecutors Reject Arrest Warrant for BTS Chairman Amid Fraud Allegations”

Date:

South Korean prosecutors have declined a police request for an arrest warrant for Bang Si-Hyuk, the chairman of the agency behind the popular K-pop group BTS. The police had sought the warrant as Bang faces allegations of investor fraud. The prosecutors found the grounds for detention insufficient and have asked the police to bolster their case.

Bang, the billionaire founder of Hybe, has been under investigation for allegedly misleading investors in 2019 regarding the company’s plans to go public. It is claimed that a private equity fund paid Bang around 200 billion won in a side deal, offering him a share of post-IPO stock sale profits. However, Bang has denied any wrongdoing, with officials from Hybe supporting his stance and emphasizing his cooperation with the investigation.

Despite the legal challenges, BTS, under the cloud of this situation, has resumed their global tour after a lengthy hiatus. The group recently performed at a free comeback concert in Seoul, attracting a large international audience, and has continued with shows in Goyang city and Tokyo. Their upcoming schedule includes a concert in Tampa, Florida, as part of a series of events in the U.S. This legal issue has brought unwanted attention to Hybe as they navigate through the tour and the absence of some BTS members due to mandatory military service.
