“Pope Leo Backs Bishops’ Call for Compassionate Immigration Approach”

Date:

Pope Leo has expressed his support for a recent special message released by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, addressing concerns about the “climate of fear and anxiety surrounding profiling and immigration enforcement.”

The message, approved by 216 out of 224 bishops without directly naming the current U.S. administration, condemned the mistreatment of migrants and highlighted worries about the impact of immigration raids on communities, as well as the lack of pastoral care for migrants in detention facilities.

During a press interaction, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of treating individuals with humanity and dignity, suggesting that there are legal avenues to address the issue of undocumented individuals in the United States without resorting to disrespect or violence.

Acknowledging the existing flaws in the U.S. immigration system, Pope Leo, hailing from Chicago, stressed that a compassionate approach does not equate to advocating for open borders.

The bishops’ statement marks their first single-issue declaration since 2013, underscoring the Catholic Church’s stance on respecting the fundamental dignity of all individuals, including immigrants. The statement, endorsed by a majority of bishops, was also delivered in a video featuring several bishops.

In response to the bishops’ message, Tom Homan, appointed by President Trump as a “border czar,” criticized their stance, citing the risks migrants face during unauthorized border crossings and advocating for secure borders as a means of saving lives.

The bishops called for collaboration among individuals of goodwill to achieve a balance between upholding human dignity and ensuring national security. However, bipartisan efforts to enact comprehensive immigration reform have faced obstacles, hindering progress towards granting legal status to law-abiding residents, particularly those brought to the U.S. as minors.

According to a Pew Research Center report, the unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S. has surged to approximately 14 million, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and compassionate approach to immigration policy.

The bishops’ message also expressed concerns about the sanctity of places of worship and the unique role of hospitals and schools, emphasizing the importance of protecting these spaces from immigration enforcement actions.

While efforts to address immigration issues have faced challenges, the bishops stressed the importance of respecting migrants’ dignity and criticized the divisive rhetoric surrounding immigration in the U.S.

Pope Leo, formerly known as Robert Prevost, has voiced concerns about prioritizing economic considerations over human dignity in decision-making processes within the U.S. He has not engaged with President Trump since assuming his papal duties but recently met with J.B. Pritzker, the Illinois governor, who has been vocal in his opposition to certain policies of the Trump administration.
