First-time parents Tanner and Jordana Friesen sought medical help in Steinbach and were quickly referred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg.
Their medical odyssey led them to numerous specialists in gastroenterology, orthopedics, neurology, and genetics, but the root cause of Beau’s symptoms remained elusive. Beau, now two years old, experiences challenges such as reduced muscle tone, delayed motor skills development, slow digestion, and global developmental delay affecting both his movement and speech.
The Friesens’ genetic counselor in Winnipeg suggested consulting Dr. Parul Jayakar, a renowned pediatrician specializing in genetics at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Florida. They hope that genome sequencing, a process that compares Beau’s unique genetic code with a healthy individual’s DNA, will provide the much-needed answers.
A diagnosis would not only benefit Beau but also facilitate access to support programs. Despite the support from family and friends, Jordana expressed the loneliness of their journey without a definitive diagnosis. The prospect of a diagnosis brings hope for a sense of community and understanding.

Although genome sequencing is not available in Manitoba, the Friesens are covering the costs of the trip to Florida, including medical expenses, flight, and accommodation. Manitoba Health does not fund such trips, prompting the Friesens to start a fundraising campaign to cover the expenses.
