A group of scholars from the University of Waterloo have officially recognized the remains of four sailors linked to the ill-fated Franklin Expedition, putting an end to a dispute spanning over a century. In 1859, British Navy explorer Francis Leopold McClintock stumbled upon a skeleton on Gladman Point, approximately 75 kilometers west of the present-day Nunavut hamlet of Gjoa Haven. The skeleton was accompanied by various documents including poems, letters, and a seaman’s certificate belonging to Harry Peglar, a petty officer on the ill-fated HMS Terror.
The expedition involving HMS Terror and HMS Erebus faced a tragic end after being trapped in sea ice in the Northwest Passage for more than two years. The crews were forced to abandon their ships and endured extreme conditions, resorting to cannibalism in a futile attempt to find help. All 129 crew members perished in the ordeal.
Douglas Stenton, a University of Waterloo anthropologist involved in the research, highlighted the unprecedented loss of life during the expedition. The identity of the sailor found by McClintock was vigorously debated due to discrepancies in the uniform worn. However, in 2013, a team of anthropologists initiated a search for living descendants of the Franklin expedition crew. Recently, they confirmed the identity of Henry Peglar as one of the sailors discovered at Gladman Point.
Peglar is the only crew member from the Terror whose remains have been positively identified, while researchers have used similar methods to identify several individuals from the Erebus. The bodies of three other sailors—William Orren, David Young, and John Bridgens—were found 130 kilometers away from Peglar’s remains. The genetic research has shed new light on the Franklin Expedition, with Stenton emphasizing the involvement of the families of the deceased crew members in uncovering their stories.
One notable descendant of the crew turned out to be BBC journalist Rich Preston, who participated in a project using modern scientific techniques to trace genealogy. The ongoing efforts of the research team aim to locate more living descendants to identify additional remains from the expedition that have been uncovered over the years.
The researchers use mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA comparisons with known descendants to confirm the likely identity of historic remains. Stenton expressed the team’s commitment to finding more descendants to identify further remains from the expedition. This research not only connects the past with the present but also serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between ambition, technology, and human limitations that remains relevant today.
