The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the top winner at the latest Academy Awards, clinching the coveted best picture Oscar along with five other accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” led the nominations with a groundbreaking 16 nods but secured victories in four categories.
Michael B. Jordan, the star of “Sinners,” triumphed as best actor, earning a standing ovation for his debut win on his inaugural nomination. Additionally, Jessie Buckley’s portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet” earned her the best actress award after a successful run through the 2026 award season, including wins at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.
In other categories, Amy Madigan snagged the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in “Weapons,” while Sean Penn secured the best supporting actor honor for his performance in “One Battle After Another,” marking his third Academy Award win.
Canadian talents also shone brightly at the ceremony. Maggie Kang from Toronto received the Oscar for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters,” competing alongside Domee Shi, another Canadian, co-directing the film “Elio.” Moreover, Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, along with Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, shared wins for makeup and hairstyling for “Frankenstein.”
Furthermore, Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski claimed the award for best animated short film with “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.” “One Battle After Another” not only secured wins for best picture and best supporting actor but also brought Paul Thomas Anderson his first-ever victories for best adapted screenplay and directing. The film also triumphed in the editing and casting categories, the latter being a new addition to the Academy Awards after 24 years.
“Sinner” collected four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s win for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s victory for best cinematography, marking a historic moment as the first racialized woman to clinch the award. “Frankenstein,” filmed in Toronto, also garnered three prestigious awards.
