President Trump announced on Thursday the tragic death of a National Guard member who was shot in an ambush near the White House by an Afghan national. The victim, Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, succumbed to her injuries, while her colleague, Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, is in critical condition, according to Trump. The shooting, which occurred on Wednesday, is being treated as a terrorism investigation by authorities.
During his first live address after the incident, Trump paid tribute to Beckstrom, describing her as a highly respected and exceptional individual who had tragically passed away.
Authorities identified the victims as members of the West Virginia National Guard, who were shot near the White House. The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, engaged in an unprovoked attack armed with a revolver, as per U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro.
The two guardsmen were on patrol outside a subway station as part of a mission Trump had initiated months ago. They had just been sworn in less than a day before the tragic incident, said Pirro.
The suspect, Lakanwal, was wounded and arrested after an exchange of gunfire. He is currently under heavy guard in a hospital, with the extent of his injuries unknown.
According to Pirro, Lakanwal traveled from Washington state to D.C. FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned ongoing search warrants in Washington state and San Diego, indicating a terrorism investigation. The suspect, a participant in the Operation Allies Welcome program, entered the U.S. in 2021.
Trump condemned the attack as an act of evil and terror, calling for a reassessment of all Afghan entries into the U.S. under the Biden administration. DHS officials confirmed a review of asylum cases and green cards issued to citizens of specific countries.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services halted processing immigration requests related to Afghan nationals indefinitely. The Trump administration has taken various measures to restrict immigration, including suspending refugee resettlement and planning a comprehensive review of all refugee admissions during the Biden era.
Advocates emphasized the rigorous vetting process for refugees and urged against demonizing Afghan communities. Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Washington faced opposition but was reinforced following the recent shooting.
