“MP Jaime Battiste Fined for Election Regulation Breaches”

Date:

MP Jaime Battiste has been fined four times for breaching election regulations during his bid for the Liberal nomination in Nova Scotia in 2019. Federal Elections Commissioner Caroline Simard disclosed that Battiste was penalized a total of $600 for various infractions, such as exceeding the donation limit by contributing over $4,000 to his campaign, depositing campaign donations into his personal bank account, personally covering campaign expenses exceeding $700, and submitting a declaration to Elections Canada containing inaccurate details.

The election rules stipulate that individuals can donate up to $1,600 annually to a political candidate or party, with candidates themselves allowed to donate an additional $1,000. Battiste was found to have breached this by surpassing the donation limit during the nomination process. Furthermore, he collected over $8,000 in donations in his personal bank account before transferring the funds to his campaign’s account, a violation as only a candidate’s financial agent is authorized to receive campaign contributions.

Moreover, only the financial agent is permitted to handle campaign expenses payments. However, Battiste used his personal credit card to cover expenses totaling more than $700, which is against Canada’s election regulations. Battiste acknowledged the errors made during the nomination process, stating that corrective actions were taken promptly in collaboration with his financial agent.

Despite the fines imposed, Battiste expressed his pride in subsequently participating in three successful elections and being approved as a candidate for leadership in 2025. Simard reduced the fines considering mitigating circumstances, including Battiste’s cooperation with the investigation. Battiste confirmed that the fines have already been settled.
