“Jonathan David Named CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year”

Date:

Canadian striker Jonathan David has been crowned as the CONCACAF men’s player of the year for the 2024-25 season. His exceptional performances at both club and international levels secured him the prestigious title, making him only the second Canadian male player to achieve this honor, following Alphonso Davies, who has won the award twice.

Having previously been nominated for the CONCACAF award in 2021, 2022, and 2023-24, the 25-year-old forward, who plays for Juventus, also holds the distinction of being a two-time Canada Soccer player of the year (in 2019 and 2024).

Meanwhile, Melchie Dumornay, a player from Haiti representing OL Lyonnes in France, clinched the CONCACAF women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year. The selection process for these awards, covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025, involved votes from CONCACAF member association players, coaches, media representatives, and fans, who chose from a pool of six nominees in each category.

Jonathan David, who is Canada’s all-time top scorer in men’s football with 37 goals in 67 appearances, was praised by CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice-president. Montagliani commended David and Dumornay for their outstanding performances throughout the season, representing their respective nations and the region in various important competitions.

Transitioning to club achievements, David made a significant impact with Lille by scoring seven goals in the Champions League, the highest tally by a CONCACAF player in a single tournament this century. He also became Lille’s leading scorer in European competitions before transferring to Juventus in July. Despite facing challenges in finding the net for Juventus, David managed one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the renowned Italian club.

Other notable male nominees included Edson Alvarez (Fenerbahce, Turkey, on loan from West Ham, England), Raul Jimenez (Fulham, England), Angel Sepulveda (Cruz Azul, Mexico), Malik Tillman (Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Germany), and Manfred Ugalde (FC Spartak Moscow, Russia).

On the women’s side, Dumornay joined an elite group by becoming the second player to win the CONCACAF award multiple times, alongside American Alex Morgan (who won in 2017 and 2018). Dumornay, a 22-year-old midfielder, received recognition for her exceptional performances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where she was named the young player of the season for the second consecutive year and earned a spot in the competition’s Best XI.

In a separate category, Raul Jimenez’s free-kick goal against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals was voted as the goal of the year by fans. The Fulham striker’s impressive performance included scoring both goals in Mexico’s semifinal victory over Canada and adding two more in the final against Panama. Fans also had the opportunity to vote on other nominated goals, including those by Christine Sinclair and Sebastian Berhalter from Canada and the Vancouver Whitecaps, respectively. Sinclair was recognized for her goal against Club America Femenil, while Berhalter was acknowledged for his goal against Pumas UNAM in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
