Lil Nas X recently shared on Instagram about his journey with bipolar disorder and time spent in rehab following an incident involving Los Angeles police officers. The pop star revealed he has been in rehab, received support from family, and sought professional help, including therapy and medication. Despite the challenges he faces as a black, gay, and bipolar individual, he expressed optimism and hinted at new music on the horizon.
Although the social media post did not directly address the charges related to the altercation with police officers in Los Angeles, authorities had previously alleged that Lil Nas X, real name Montero Lamar Hill, was involved in an incident where he confronted officers while nearly naked in August 2025. The artist was arrested, spent time in jail, and faced multiple felony charges, including battery on a police officer and resisting an executive officer.
Subsequently, Lil Nas X entered a mental health diversion program, with the possibility of having the charges dismissed if he complies with the treatment program and remains law-abiding for two years. The court attributed the incident with police to his bipolar disorder, considering it an anomaly compared to his usual behavior.
Having risen to fame with the hit song “Old Town Road” in 2019, Lil Nas X has encountered both acclaim and controversy throughout his career. The track sparked debates on the definition of country music and achieved chart-topping success. The artist’s openness about his sexuality and provocative social media presence have also stirred discussions on homophobia and led to backlash from various groups.
His artistic ventures, including the release of controversial “Satan shoes” and boundary-pushing music videos, have further fueled controversy and legal disputes. Lil Nas X’s musical projects, such as the album “Montero” and EP “Days Before Dreamboy,” reflect his personal journey and exploration of self-expression. The singer continues to work on new music, with an upcoming album titled “Dreamboy” in the works.
