After a century of obscurity, the countenances of Japanese Canadian veterans from the First World War are now gracing the streets of Vancouver for the first time. A dedicated community historian undertook a 15-year quest to unearth their stories, contacting descendants and revealing their heroic deeds to the public eye. Debbie Jiang, the historian, emphasized the importance of recognizing these forgotten soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country.
These veterans, who enlisted in Canada’s military during the First World War, were not your typical recruits of that era. Many were in their 30s and 40s, some already decorated veterans. Despite facing discrimination and being denied voting rights, they enlisted in Alberta, the only province that allowed them to join, and bravely fought on the front lines. Jiang highlighted their determination to fight for voting rights for their community, showcasing their valor and dedication.
The Japanese Canadian troops, including Otoji Kamachi, a retired private, displayed exceptional courage in battles such as Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Ypres, and Passchendaele. Kamachi, who survived multiple gunshot wounds during his service, later suffered further injustice during the Second World War when the Canadian government interned him along with 22,000 other Japanese Canadians. Despite these hardships, Kamachi rebuilt his life as a farmer after the war.
The legacy of these veterans lives on through banners displayed in downtown Vancouver, honoring their service and sacrifice. Jiang’s efforts to bring these stories to light aim to ensure that these individuals are remembered and their names never forgotten. The images of these veterans serve as a poignant reminder of their contributions to Canada’s military history, shedding light on a chapter that had long been overshadowed.
