Laurence Fournier Beaudry Acquires French Citizenship

Date:

Laurence Fournier Beaudry revealed her acquisition of French citizenship on Saturday, making her eligible to represent France at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics alongside her partner, Guillaume Cizeron. The 33-year-old, originally from Canada, made the decision after her former partner, Nikolaj Sorensen, was suspended for “sexual maltreatment,” leading her to team up with Olympic ice dance champion Cizeron in March.

Expressing her excitement on Instagram, Fournier Beaudry, who previously competed for Denmark, shared, “It’s official: I’m now French. An immense joy, and especially a great gratitude to all those who have accompanied me on this beautiful journey since the very beginning.” It is common in ice dance and pairs figure skating for athletes to switch national allegiances due to partner shortages.

Cizeron, aged 30, and Gabriella Papadakis, his former partner, clinched the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and secured five world titles before retiring in December 2024. Returning to competition with Fournier Beaudry earlier this year, Cizeron triumphed at the Grand Prix de France last month.

France’s Laurence Fournier and Guillaume Cizeron scored 211.02 points, claiming the ice dance title at the ISU Grand Prix de France in Angers, France.
