“Devastating Fire Destroys Fish Plant in St. Mary’s”

Date:

A devastating fire has razed the fish plant in St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, amidst severe weather conditions. Mayor Steve Ryan disclosed that he was informed of the fire earlier in the night and was the first to arrive at the scene. The plant, operated by St. Mary’s Bay Fisheries, has suffered extensive damage, with much of the building already lost.

Despite the efforts of three fire crews on-site, the hurricane-force winds accompanying a weather bomb sweeping through the region hindered their progress, resulting in the structure being engulfed in flames before they could contain the fire. Meteorologist Rodney Barney reported wind gusts reaching up to 172 km/h at Cape St. Mary’s during the incident.

Expressing profound sadness, Sherry Gambin-Walsh, the Liberal MHA for Placentia-St. Mary’s, conveyed the community’s devastation over the loss. She empathized with the workers who helplessly witnessed their primary source of employment being consumed by the flames, highlighting the significant impact the plant had on the local community.

The incident has left residents and officials reeling from the loss, emphasizing the profound impact of this tragedy on the St. Mary’s community.
