“Coyote Attack Injures Child at Whitby Playground”

Date:

A young child sustained severe injuries following a coyote attack at a playground in Whitby, Ont., amid recent coyote sightings, according to Durham police. The incident occurred at Vanier Park on Sunday evening, where a coyote approached and bit the two-year-old boy. Fortunately, the child’s guardian and onlookers were able to scare the coyote off before the boy was rushed to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after the playground incident, authorities received reports of another coyote in distress near Harriet and Annes streets. Police responded promptly, located the animal, and safely removed it from the area without any reported injuries.

Durham police, in collaboration with the Town of Whitby, local animal services, and the Durham Region Health Department, are actively investigating the incidents, monitoring coyote activity, and implementing measures to mitigate the risk of future encounters. Emphasizing the rarity of aggressive behavior by coyotes towards humans, authorities urged residents to exercise caution, especially in park areas, playgrounds, trails, and natural surroundings during peak coyote activity hours.

Recent incidents involving coyotes in Durham include a previous child injury from a coyote bite near a forested area in Whitby. Following multiple reported coyote interactions in the region, police issued a cautionary advisory, urging vigilance, especially for pedestrians and pet owners frequenting public spaces.

According to the town’s online dashboard, Whitby has recorded 96 coyote sightings in the past month. Additionally, various neighboring communities, including Toronto, have grappled with increased coyote sightings. Notably, York police issued a public alert after two children were attacked recently, while Toronto experienced a surge in coyote reports in the Liberty Village neighborhood last year, prompting the city to devise a new coyote management strategy.

In response to the escalating coyote concerns, authorities offered safety tips to the public, advising individuals to maintain a safe distance from coyotes, supervise children and pets outdoors, heed signage in coyote-prone areas, avoid known coyote territories, eliminate food attractants, and remain calm while slowly backing away if encountering a coyote. Residents were also urged to promptly report any coyote sightings to animal services for further action.
