“Canada Eligible for Eurovision Debut After EBU Approval”

Date:

Canada has gained eligibility to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest following the full membership approval of CBC/Radio-Canada by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). While the country can now submit an entry to Eurovision, CBC has not confirmed its participation in the competition yet.

Leon Mar, a spokesperson for CBC/Radio-Canada, mentioned that they will provide more details regarding the Eurovision Song Contest at a later time. The Canadian government had expressed interest in exploring Canada’s involvement in Eurovision in the 2025 budget, with the prime minister actively supporting the initiative.

Eurovision director Martin Green had previously expressed openness to Canadian participation in the contest. Several non-European countries like Israel, Morocco, and Australia have previously competed in Eurovision. Australia, despite not being a full EBU member, received special permission to participate.

The recent victory of Bulgarian singer Dara in the 2026 Eurovision competition with the song “Bangaranga” showcases the diversity of participating countries. The promotion of CBC to a full EBU member allows access to various services like investigative journalism networks and news exchanges, enhancing collaboration and combating disinformation.

Both CBC and EBU executives emphasized the mutual benefits of this partnership, highlighting the importance of public service media in promoting cultural expression and combating misinformation. EBU Director General Noel Curran acknowledged Canada’s significant contributions to the union, emphasizing the strength and value of Canada’s voice within the EBU community.
