Collinda Joseph Confident as Lead Shooter for Canada’s Wheelchair Curling Team

Date:

With less than 110 days left until the Paralympics kick off in Milan-Cortina, Collinda Joseph, a wheelchair curler, is feeling more at ease and confident in her role as a lead shooter. Unlike her previous stint as an alternate in the Beijing Games four years ago, where she only played one game, Joseph is now set to start as the lead for Canada’s wheelchair curling squad alongside skip Mark Ideson, second Ina Forrest, and third Jon Thurston.

Having won her first provincial championship in 2009 and her first Ontario title as a skip in 2016, Joseph made her debut for Canada in 2019 and has since participated in four world championships. Reflecting on her past experience as an alternate, Joseph emphasized the challenges of not being sure about her status for the next game and the desire to contribute to the team’s success.

Canada’s head coach, Mick Lizmore, highlighted the upcoming Paralympics as a significant opportunity for Joseph and Thurston to experience the games with their families and friends, especially after the absence of Canadian supporters at the 2022 event due to the Covid pandemic.

In the bronze-medal match of 2022, Thurston showcased his skill by executing a crucial takeout shot, scoring four points in an 8-3 victory over Slovakia. Lizmore commended Thurston’s performance, noting his progression to a high level of play over the years.

Ideson, the team’s skip, acknowledged Forrest, a five-time Paralympian, for her leadership qualities and influence on the team’s performance. Forrest, who has a history of winning gold and bronze medals in previous Paralympics, is described as a professional and influential figure within the team.

As the team prepares for the upcoming Paralympics, they aim to enhance their performance through additional international matches and teamwork. The squad, consisting of a mix of experienced players and a cohesive unit, is dedicated to achieving the highest level of success in the competition.

Canada, known for its consistent success in wheelchair curling at the Paralympics since 2006, will commence their journey in the Milan-Cortina tournament on March 7 against Italy.
