U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the Trump administration is prepared for any potential retaliation from Canada if President Trump proceeds with imposing new tariffs. Greer emphasized that the focus is on safeguarding domestic supply chains rather than engaging in a trade war, noting that the tariff actions are not exclusive to Canada but part of a global strategy. In response to Trump’s threat of imposing a 50 per cent tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards, trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified.
Greer described the ongoing talks with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and hinted at a possible conciliatory approach from the Canadian side. However, Greer emphasized that the U.S. will not tolerate any retaliatory measures from other countries and will respond accordingly.
Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada views the impending tariff implementation on August 19 as a critical juncture, indicating a potential halt in talks if the tariffs are enforced. Greer reiterated the commitment to prioritizing President Trump’s trade policies and mentioned that options will be presented to both Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney before the deadline.
Additionally, Carney has stressed the importance of addressing existing tariffs on sectors such as automobiles and steel in addition to averting the new 50 per cent levy. Recent proposals from the U.S. aimed at reducing sectoral tariffs were considered insufficient by Canadian negotiators. Despite efforts to address concerns raised by the U.S., uncertainties loom over the possibility of reaching a timely agreement.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the government to stand firm on dairy negotiations amid escalating tensions. Greer highlighted various trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, particularly emphasizing disputes over alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs.
Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered Greer’s assertions, defending Canada’s actions as responses to what he deemed as unjust measures imposed by the U.S. McKenna underscored the importance of defending Canada’s interests in the face of unfair trade practices.
The situation remains complex as both countries navigate trade negotiations amidst escalating tensions and diverging perspectives on key trade issues.
