After wrapping up practice on Thursday, Kent Maugeri, the special teams coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was actively moving around the field. Maugeri is responsible for managing the kicking and return game, which involves a significant portion of the team’s roster.
Reflecting on his role, Maugeri expressed his dedication to being an effective teacher and setting high standards for the players. He emphasized the importance of equipping the players with the necessary skills for success on the field.
Throughout the game, Maugeri stays in communication with head coach Corey Mace to discuss crucial decisions. Mace highlighted the team’s emphasis on special teams play and commended players who go above and beyond their roles to contribute to the unit.
Having joined the Roughriders in 2016, Maugeri is the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff. Originally hired as an offensive assistant by Chris Jones from Lindenwood University, Maugeri was later promoted by former coach Craig Dickenson to lead the special teams in 2022.
Despite experiencing coaching changes over his tenure, Maugeri has garnered praise from his current head coach, Mace, who described him as a fantastic individual with a strong coaching style that is reflected in the special teams unit’s performance.
Maugeri described his special teams unit as distinct from the offense and defense, emphasizing their motto of ‘junkyard dogs’ who prioritize speed and physicality in their play.
After victories, Maugeri honors standout special teams performers by presenting them with a chain in the locker room, reminiscent of the iconic 1980s professional wrestler Junkyard Dog. As the Riders gear up to face the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup, Maugeri aims to award the chain to a victorious special teams player on Sunday night.
