Phones in southern Manitoba were inundated with tornado alerts on Tuesday night, despite the distant threat for many recipients. Some individuals reported receiving over 20 alerts throughout the evening. The confirmation of two tornadoes south of Winnipeg was made by Environment and Climate Change Canada, with ongoing investigations into potential additional tornado occurrences in the region.
Tyler Samagalski, who was at a bar in East Selkirk during the storm, mentioned that he and fellow patrons began disregarding the repeated alerts on their phones as the weather outside did not indicate the presence of a tornado. The alerts were issued to all devices within the “mobile coverage area,” leading to individuals in places like Winnipeg receiving notifications about tornadoes in locations such as Niverville, over 30 kilometers away, due to their proximity to a cellphone tower.
Environment Canada is currently investigating the multiple alerts issue and is working on implementing a more targeted warning system for thunderstorms and tornadoes. This initiative involves a four-hour course on “convective alert modernization,” which is set to change the way severe weather warnings are issued in Canada. Justin Oertel, a forecaster, emphasized the necessity for this system upgrade to ensure that the public takes warnings seriously and to address the fatigue caused by excessive alerts.
The concerns raised by residents like Jason Emmers from East Selkirk reflect the need for a more precise alert system to prevent panic or desensitization due to the frequency of notifications. Emmers, who received around 20 tornado warnings, stressed the importance of tailored alerts that provide specific information about the location of potential tornadoes. This sentiment was echoed by others who expressed the need for more detailed alerts to reduce unnecessary fear and anxiety during severe weather events.
