PM Carney Stresses Reliability in Trade Talks

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his reluctance to use Canadian energy exports as leverage in the face of potential further tariffs on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump. During a housing-related news conference in Red Deer, Alta., Carney emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement before the new 50 percent tariffs take effect on Aug. 19. While he acknowledged various options available to support the economy and address other issues, Carney refrained from disclosing specific strategies, focusing instead on fostering a mutual agreement.

When questioned a second time about the possibility of leveraging Alberta oil, Carney underscored the significance of being a reliable supplier, stating that Canadians can be trusted in fulfilling their commitments. He emphasized the value of maintaining supply continuity, highlighting the impracticality of withholding key commodities or services. Carney’s stance marks a departure from his previous remarks following discussions with Canada’s premiers, where he had indicated that all options were under consideration if an agreement was not reached by the deadline.

While Ontario Premier Doug Ford has advocated for using energy exports as a bargaining tool in negotiations with the U.S., Alberta’s Danielle Smith and Carney have dismissed the notion of withholding energy supplies. The looming 50 percent tariffs proposed by the Trump administration are attributed to alleged unfair trade practices, including provincial bans on U.S.-made alcohol, protectionism in Canada’s dairy industry, and the integrated auto sector. LeBlanc, Canada’s federal minister for Canada-U.S. trade, held a comprehensive meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, signaling ongoing efforts to address trade challenges.

The latest tariff threat coincides with the ongoing Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) negotiations, with Carney and Trump committing to intensify discussions following the recent developments.
