The individual behind the award-winning animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, the Korean-Canadian filmmaker, received the key during a panel discussion at Departure Festival, where Mayor Olivia Chow surprised her on stage.

Mayor Chow commended Kang for her achievements and highlighted how her journey would serve as inspiration for future generations. Kang, alongside Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, her alma mater, posed for photographs after receiving the key without making a speech.

Since its debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken records on Netflix, becoming the platform’s most-watched film. During the panel, Kang hinted at her plans for the upcoming film, expressing her commitment to delivering another project that aligns with her vision.

Later that day, Kang is set to be recognized with the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala.
