After Pavel Talankin, the recent Academy Award winner for co-directing the acclaimed documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” was required to check his Oscar on a flight from New York to Frankfurt, the prestigious statuette went missing. The Transportation Security Administration insisted the Oscar couldn’t be carried onboard due to security concerns, leading to it being placed in a box and sent to the cargo hold.
However, upon arrival in Frankfurt, the Oscar was nowhere to be found, sparking a global outcry. Responding to the situation, Lufthansa airline confirmed on Friday that they had located the lost Oscar and assured that it was securely in their possession in Frankfurt. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and stated that arrangements were being made for the prompt return of the award to its rightful owner.
Lufthansa also mentioned that an internal investigation into the incident was underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the Oscar’s disappearance and subsequent recovery.
The documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” which earned Talankin and his co-director David Borenstein the Academy Award for best documentary in March, highlighted the story of Talankin, a former teacher in Russia, who recorded his students supporting Putin’s actions in Ukraine. The film’s powerful message was underscored by Talankin’s plea during the acceptance speech to end all wars for the sake of future generations.
Despite attempts to seek clarification from the TSA, the agency had not responded to inquiries by Friday.
