“US-Ukraine Peace Talks: Progress Made Amid Concerns”

Date:

The United States and Ukraine collaborated on Monday to bridge the gaps in a peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict with Russia. This effort followed adjustments to a U.S. plan that had raised concerns among Kyiv and its European partners. The White House and Kyiv revealed a “refined peace framework” after initial discussions in Geneva, but did not disclose specific details.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine’s delegation was returning home to provide an update following talks with U.S. officials in Switzerland. The U.S. introduced a 28-point peace plan last week, setting a deadline for Ukraine to agree to a framework by Thursday to resolve the ongoing conflict, which is considered the deadliest in Europe since World War II.

Despite the talks on Sunday, there was no public announcement regarding how the revised plan would address critical issues such as ensuring Ukraine’s security against potential Russian threats and financing the country’s reconstruction efforts. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of finding compromises that would enhance Ukraine’s strength without compromising its sovereignty.

The leaders of the “coalition of the willing,” which supports Ukraine, will convene via video conference on Tuesday to discuss the progress of peace negotiations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed the commitment to achieving a just and enduring peace, acknowledging that while there has been progress, more work lies ahead.

U.S. President Donald Trump continued to pressure Ukraine to reach a resolution, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the American delegation in talks. Zelenskyy is expected to visit the United States soon to discuss sensitive aspects of the plan with Trump. Trump expressed frustration on social media over Ukraine’s perceived lack of gratitude for U.S. efforts in resolving the conflict.

Parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk reiterated Ukraine’s stance on key issues, insisting that EU and NATO membership must be integral parts of the country’s security assurances and any peace agreement. European allies proposed an alternative plan that would reduce territorial concessions and include a security guarantee akin to NATO support from the United States if Ukraine faces aggression.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia had not received official updates on the outcome of the Geneva talks. When questioned about a reported change regarding NATO and Ukraine, Peskov emphasized the need for verified information through official channels.

Russian forces have made advances in certain regions, while Ukraine’s critical infrastructure has faced drone and missile attacks, leading to disruptions in essential services for millions of people. The Russian Defence Ministry announced the capture of Zatyshshia village in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, along with progress in Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.

In Moscow, three airports briefly halted flights due to a downed Ukrainian drone, according to the city’s mayor. The drone incident followed a drone attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine, which resulted in casualties.
