The Competition Bureau has announced plans to conduct an investigation into how competition within the food supply chain impacts the cost of groceries for Canadian consumers. The bureau will focus on three main areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing practices to identify any potential issues.
This comprehensive examination aims to determine where regulatory intervention may be necessary and what actions policymakers can implement to enhance affordability. Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, stressed the significance of food costs to all Canadians and highlighted that robust competition plays a crucial role in keeping prices at reasonable levels. Industry stakeholders are encouraged to provide their insights on the matter.
The upcoming investigation will build upon the conclusions of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and drive innovation. The final report, expected to be released next spring, will contain detailed findings and recommendations for government authorities on enhancing competition throughout the food supply chain.
