Ovechkin Makes History with 900th NHL Goal

Date:

Alex Ovechkin has joined the exclusive 900-goal club in the NHL, becoming the first player in league history to achieve this feat. The Washington Capitals superstar reached this milestone during a game against the St. Louis Blues, scoring his 900th goal 2:39 into the second period, securing a 6-1 victory.

Expressing his excitement, Ovechkin remarked, “A couple of days ago, somebody asked me if I think about [900]. Of course, it’s a huge number, and to be the first player ever to reach it in NHL history is a special moment for me. It’s nice to achieve this milestone at home so that the fans and my family can be here to witness it. It’s pretty cool.”

Ovechkin scored his 900th goal by capitalizing on Jakob Chychrun’s rebound in the offensive zone. Positioned at the bottom of the right circle, he backhanded the puck past the Blues’ goalie, Jordan Binnington, who couldn’t make a timely recovery. The team bench erupted in celebration, with Binnington playfully attempting to keep the milestone puck by tucking it into his pants.

Reflecting on Ovechkin’s recent achievements, teammate John Carlson stated, “None of us can relate to a ‘slump’ for him. I think he’ll gain a lot of momentum from this.”

Entering the season after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career record with his 895th goal in April, Ovechkin needed three more goals to reach 900. Following a brief goal drought, he scored his 900th goal in the game against the Blues, with previous goals against Minnesota and Columbus.

As Ovechkin eyes the 1,000-goal mark, his future remains uncertain as he is in the final season of his contract. Despite any doubts about his performance, his teammates remain confident in his goal-scoring abilities.

Ovechkin has maintained remarkable consistency throughout his career, avoiding significant injuries that could have disrupted his milestones. His goal achievements have been evenly spread out over time, with each century mark representing a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Reflecting on his journey, Ovechkin shared, “I just try to play the game as best as I can. With plenty of games left in the season, it’s always a matter of time before scoring another goal. It’s a nice feeling to reach this milestone.”
