Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his stance of not yielding any territory, resisting pressure from the United States for concessions to Russia while seeking more European backing for Ukraine. Zelenskyy, in a communication on WhatsApp with reporters, mentioned discussions on three documents with American and European partners: a constantly evolving 20-point framework document, a document concerning security assurances, and a document focusing on Ukraine’s recovery efforts.
He informed that an updated version of Ukraine’s peace proposal would be presented to the U.S. on Wednesday, emphasizing the advanced development of Ukrainian and European components. Zelenskyy expressed readiness to share these proposals with U.S. partners to expedite feasible actions together.
In a separate update, Zelenskyy briefed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the situation in Ukraine, particularly on the frontline and resilience efforts. He expressed gratitude for Canada’s ongoing support, including a recent commitment of $200 million for military equipment under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) established by NATO and the U.S. administration.
On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Zelenskyy to accept the U.S. proposal for Ukraine to concede territory to Russia, citing Moscow’s dominance in the longstanding invasion. Trump emphasized that Ukraine needs to cooperate, as Russia’s power surpasses Ukraine’s capabilities. Zelenskyy previously communicated that conceding land was not an option for Ukraine, citing legal, constitutional, and moral grounds.
Zelenskyy also responded to Trump’s call for a presidential election, seeking assistance from the U.S. and Europe to ensure election security. He proposed holding elections within the next 60-90 days once security measures are in place. The Ukrainian president recently met with Pope Leo at Castel Gandolfo and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, discussing diplomatic efforts for peace and the Vatican’s involvement in the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
Negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine aimed at refining the U.S. peace proposal concluded with efforts to address European concerns and secure robust security assurances to prevent future Russian aggression. European leaders are focused on backing any ceasefire with strong security guarantees to deter potential Russian incursions. A contentious point in the U.S. plan involves the suggested cession of control over the Donbas region to Russia, a proposal staunchly opposed by Ukraine and its European allies.
Putin reiterated Russia’s claim over the Donbas as “historic territory” and reaffirmed intentions to achieve war objectives. The ongoing conflict has seen increased military activities, with both sides engaging in drone attacks and facing disruptions to energy infrastructure. Ukraine reported drone strikes on Russian territories, while Russia claimed to have neutralized Ukrainian drone attacks, resulting in casualties and property damage in a Russian region.
The situation remains tense, with both sides continuing military actions and facing repercussions from the conflict.
