A recent study conducted by University of Ottawa researchers has revealed that the application of woodchips on forest trails can lead to a significant reduction in local tick populations. This simple approach could potentially lower the risk of tick bites and the transmission of Lyme disease for individuals exploring wooded areas.
The research team selected two locations within Ottawa’s Greenbelt for their study: the Mer Bleue sector in the east and the Stony Swamp sector in the west. Across 20 trail segments, each measuring 50 meters in length, the researchers applied either untreated woodchips or woodchips treated with the pesticide deltamethrin.
Results showed that the use of untreated woodchips led to a 50% decrease in tick numbers, while the application of pesticide-treated woodchips resulted in a remarkable 99% reduction, as stated by researcher Katarina Ost.
Ost explained that woodchips are effective in deterring ticks because these parasitic arachnids typically climb vegetation, such as grass, to reach hikers or their pets. By covering the trail with woodchips, the growth of the vegetation ticks rely on is prevented.
The study also highlighted the importance of staying on designated paths for the woodchips to be effective. Moreover, experts emphasized the significance of controlling tick populations at the source to prevent the spread of tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.
Dr. Christopher Labos, a cardiologist and epidemiologist at McGill University, noted that future research could investigate the direct impact of reducing tick populations on the incidence of Lyme disease. While decreasing tick numbers is a positive step, confirming a decrease in Lyme disease cases would be a significant medical achievement.
The study’s findings suggest that the strategic use of woodchips on trails could be a practical and environmentally friendly method to combat tick-related health risks. Further research and public awareness are essential in addressing the challenges posed by tick-borne diseases.
