The FBI apprehended a 30-year-old man from Virginia and formally accused him on Thursday of planting two pipe bombs in Washington the night before the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, concluding a lengthy investigation that sparked various conspiracy theories.
Brian Cole Jr., a resident of Woodbridge, Va., faces charges of using an explosive device and attempting malicious destruction using explosive materials, as announced by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and other federal authorities at a news briefing in Washington. The motive behind the alleged bombing at the Republican and Democratic Party buildings near the Capitol remains undisclosed, along with the breakthrough that led to the arrest nearly five years later.
Speaking at the conference, Bondi stated that the investigation is ongoing, with search warrants being executed, hinting at potential additional charges. Intensive scrutiny of existing evidence ultimately led investigators to identify Cole as the suspect.
The bombs were rendered inert on the day when supporters of former President Donald Trump breached Congress in a bid to impede the certification of President Joe Biden’s election victory in 2020. The violent mob that infiltrated the Capitol on that day attacked around 140 officers and caused over $2.8 million in damages.
Details about Cole’s legal representation remain uncertain. Court documents mention that Cole resides with his family in Woodbridge and is employed in a bail bondsman’s office in Northern Virginia.
The arrest culminated a protracted investigation during which the FBI encountered challenges in pinpointing a suspect, prompting multiple appeals to the public for information. Surveillance footage released by the FBI depicted the would-be bomber sporting distinctive Nike Air Max Speed sneakers.
Conspiracy theories circulating within pro-Trump circles have long fixated on the attempted bombings. Former conservative podcaster turned FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, in a baseless claim on his podcast, insinuated that the FBI deliberately withheld the suspect’s identity due to an alleged “inside job.”
Recently, the case regained prominence after a far-right media outlet erroneously linked a former Capitol Police officer to the incident. The FBI affidavit unveiled that Cole had acquired bomb components in 2019 and 2020, including pipes, kitchen timers, and battery connectors.
During the news briefing, FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the efforts of a reconstituted team of investigators and experts who meticulously reevaluated all evidence and data. In a bid to invigorate the investigation, the FBI released fresh surveillance footage in January, prior to Trump’s return to office, resulting in a surge of tips and a $500,000 reward offer.
Upon resuming office in January, Trump granted pardons to nearly 1,500 individuals facing criminal charges related to their involvement in the Capitol riot.
