Victoria Mboko emerged victorious in the Hong Kong Open final against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, securing a 7-5, 6-7 (9), 6-2 win. The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont., clinched her second WTA title of the year, following her earlier triumph at the National Bank Open in Montreal. Reflecting on her win, Mboko expressed her satisfaction with closing the season on a high note and emphasized her approach of managing expectations and taking each day as it comes.
Mboko’s victory marked her second consecutive win against Bucsa this year, having previously defeated her in Rome qualifying. Despite facing a tough challenge in the match, particularly during the second set, Mboko remained composed and focused on regrouping for the decisive third set. Her resilience paid off as she managed to secure the championship point and ultimately claim the title.
Having defeated fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the semifinals, Mboko showcased her determination and skill throughout the tournament. Overcoming a wrist injury earlier in the season, she demonstrated her ability to bounce back and perform at a high level. With her recent success, Mboko is anticipated to break into the WTA top 20 when the updated rankings are released next week.
