“Veterinarian’s License Revoked After Cat’s Botched Surgery”

Date:

A Winnipeg resident, Noelle McIvor, expressed relief over the decision to revoke the practice license of a veterinarian, Dr. Wenchao Zheng, by 2026 after an incident where her cat required leg amputation due to a surgical error. Dr. Zheng, who faced disciplinary actions in the past, pleaded guilty to professional misconduct and agreed to retire. As part of the disciplinary measures, he is prohibited from conducting orthopedic surgeries, must fulfill educational requirements, pay a fine, and display notifications at his clinic.

The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association, citing multiple disciplinary cases against Dr. Zheng, emphasized his disregard for regulations, prompting the decision to end his practice. Dr. Zheng, in response, alleged discrimination by the association based on race or ethnicity. The association, however, clarified that the disciplinary actions were in response to complaints from clients.

This marks the first instance of the association canceling a veterinarian’s license, indicating the severity of the situation. Dr. Zheng, while expressing readiness to retire and sell his clinic, highlighted his lower fees and community support initiatives. The complaints against Dr. Zheng involved issues with surgical procedures on pets, leading to complications and treatment concerns.

Noelle McIvor, a former employee at Dr. Zheng’s clinic, recounted the distressing experience with her cat’s surgery and post-operative care. Despite Dr. Zheng taking responsibility and covering costs for corrective procedures, the incident raised concerns about his practice standards. The inquiry panel also highlighted deficiencies in Dr. Zheng’s knowledge and practices, especially in anesthesia and surgical consent protocols.

In conclusion, stakeholders have varying opinions on Dr. Zheng’s case, with calls for stricter accountability measures in veterinary practices. While some acknowledge his efforts in a challenging environment, the focus remains on upholding professional standards in animal care.
