“Ukrainian Newcomer Thrives in Winnipeg Fashion Business”

Date:

Olha Zolotkova settled in Winnipeg shortly after the mass invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, initially not fluent in English. However, she has now embarked on establishing her own business in the Exchange District.

Formerly a teacher, principal, and textbook editor in Ukraine, Zolotkova had considered opening a daycare upon arriving in Canada. During a summer break from her role as an educational assistant at a Winnipeg school, she decided to launch By Zola, an online store and boutique specializing in plus-size women’s clothing, driven by the challenge she faced finding suitable clothes in Winnipeg.

Zolotkova, who continues to work as an educational assistant, is optimistic about the market potential for the clothing lines she offers, expressing enthusiasm for both education and entrepreneurship. She joins a wave of Ukrainian newcomers in Manitoba venturing into business, with individuals like Mila Shykota creating platforms like the Ukrainian Guide to Winnipeg, an online directory showcasing businesses started by Ukrainian immigrants and those selling Ukrainian products.

Vitaliy Lebezun, vice-president of Warkentin Business Solutions, has been aiding Ukrainian arrivals in Manitoba with business setup and self-employment queries. He notes a trend of individuals either reestablishing their businesses or fulfilling long-held entrepreneurial aspirations in their new environment.

Yuliia Okhrimenko, along with her husband Serhii, opened KoloShop, a Ukrainian gift store in Winnipeg, featuring products made by fellow Ukrainian refugees. The couple aims to support their community and provide an avenue for displaced individuals to earn income through selling their creations.

Yuliia and Serhii, who previously operated a flower shop in Ukraine, emphasize the importance of solidarity within the community. They acknowledge the bittersweet experience of building a new life in Winnipeg while cherishing memories of their homeland.

As for Zolotkova, while uncertain about her long-term plans due to the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine, she is focused on growing her business and integrating into Manitoba as her new home, where her family has also found roots.
